Antarctic silverfish Pleuragramma antarcticum is the most abundant pelagic fish in the High Antarctic shelf waters of the Southern Ocean, where it plays a pivotal role in the trophic web as the major link between lower and higher trophic levels. Despite the ecological importance of this species, knowledge about its role in the biogeochemical cycle is poor. We determine the seasonal contribution of Antarctic silverfish to carbon flux in terms of faeces and eggs, from samples collected in the Ross Sea. We find that eggs and faeces production generate a flux accounting for 41% of annual POC flux and that the variability of this flux is modulated by spawning strategy. This study shows the important role of this organism as a vector for carbon flux. Since Antarctic silverfish are strongly dependent on sea-ice, they might be especially sensitive to climatic changes. Our results suggest that a potential decrease in the biomass of this organism is likely to impact marine biogeochemical cycles, and this should be factored in when assessing Southern Ocean carbon budget.

The water reuse facilities of industrial parks face the challenge of managing a growing variety of wastewater sources as their inlet water. Typically, this clustering outcome is designed by engineers with extensive expertise. This paper presents an innovative application of unsupervised learning methods to classify inlet water in Chinese water reuse stations, aiming to reduce reliance on engineer experience. The concept of 'water quality distance' was incorporated into three unsupervised learning clustering algorithms (K-means, DBSCAN, and AGNES), which were validated through six case studies. Of the six cases, three were employed to illustrate the feasibility of the unsupervised learning clustering algorithm. The results indicated that the clustering algorithm exhibited greater stability and excellence compared to both artificial clustering and ChatGPT-based clustering. The remaining three cases were utilized to showcase the reliability of the three clustering algorithms. The findings revealed that the AGNES algorithm demonstrated superior potential application ability. The average purity in six cases of K-means, DBSCAN, and AGNES were 0.947, 0.852, and 0.955, respectively.

The golden coral Savalia savaglia is a long-living ecosystem engineer of Mediterranean circalittoral assemblages, able to induce necrosis of gorgonians' and black corals' coenenchyme and grow on their cleaned organic skeleton. Despite its rarity, in Boka Kotorska Bay (Montenegro) a shallow population of more than 1000 colonies was recorded close to underwater freshwater springs, which create very peculiar environmental conditions. In this context, the species was extremely abundant at two sites, while gorgonians were rare. The abundance and size of S. savaglia colonies and the diversity of the entire benthic assemblage were investigated by photographic sampling in a depth range of 0-35 m. Several living fragments of S. savaglia spread on the sea floor and small settled colonies (< 5 cm high) suggested a high incidence of asexual reproduction and a non-parasitic behaviour of this population. This was confirmed by studying thin sections of the basal portion of the trunk where the central core, generally represented by the remains of the gorgonian host skeleton, was lacking. The S. savaglia population of Boka Kotorska Bay forms the unique Mediterranean assemblage of the species deserving the definition of animal forest. Recently, temporary mitigation measures for anthropogenic impact were issued by the Government of Montenegro. Nevertheless, due to the importance of the sites the establishment of a permanent Marine Protected Area is strongly recommended.

In this study, we used a comprehensive array of sampling techniques to examine the pollution caused by organic micropollutants in Izmit Bay for the first time. Our methodology contains spot seawater sampling, semi-permeable membrane devices (SPMDs) passive samplers for time-weighted average (TWA), and sediment sampling for long-term pollution detection in Izmit Bay, together. Additionally, the analysis results obtained with these three sampling methods were compared in this study. Over the course of two seasons in 2020 and 2021, we deployed SPMDs for 21 days in the first season and for 30 days in the second season. This innovative approach allowed us to gather sea water samples and analyze them for the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Σ15 PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (Σ7 PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (Σ11 OCPs). Using SPMD-based passive sampling, we measured micropollutant concentrations: PAHs ranged from 1963 to 10342 pg/L in 2020 and 1338 to 6373 pg/L in 2021; PCBs from 17.46 to 61.90 pg/L in 2020 and 8.37 to 78.10 pg/L in 2021; and OCPs from 269.2 to 8868 pg/L in 2020 and 141.7 to 1662 pg/L in 2021. Our findings revealed parallels between the concentrations of PAHs, PCBs, and OCPs in both SPMDs and sediment samples, providing insights into the distribution patterns of these pollutants in the marine ecosystem. However, it is worth noting that due to limited data acquisition, the suitability of spot sampling in comparison to instantaneous sampling remains inconclusive, highlighting the need for further investigation and data collection.

Impacts of river discharge on coastal ocean processes are multi-dimensional. Studies on sinking particle fluxes, composition and their seasonal variability in coastal oceans are very limited. In this study, we investigated the impact of river discharge on seasonal variability in sinking fluxes of total mass, biogenic and lithogenic material in a river-dominated continental margin, western coastal Bay of Bengal. Higher POC, lithogenic and total mass fluxes were found during early southwest monsoon, and are decoupled with peak river discharge and elevated primary production. It is attributed to cross-shelf transport of re-suspended surface sediments from shelf region. Peak river discharge followed by elevated chlorophyll-a suggest nutrients supply though river discharge support primary production. Elemental C:N ratios, δ13C and δ15N results likely suggest that both marine and terrestrial sources contributed to sinking POM, . Overall, higher sinking fluxes during southwest monsoon than rest of the year suggest that seasonal river discharge exerts considerable impact on sinking fluxes in the western coastal Bay of Bengal.

In this study, the pollution status of antibiotics and ARGs in sediments from the land-sea intersection of Liaodong Bay was analyzed. The results showed that the level of antibiotic pollution ranged from ND to 433.27 ng/kg, with quinolones and tetracycline as the dominant antibiotics. The relative abundance of ARGs ranged from 3.62 × 10-3 to 1.32 × 10-1 copies/16SrRNA copies, with aminoglycoside and MLSB resistance genes being dominant. Regarding spatial distribution, the land and estuary areas showed higher antibiotic pollution levels than the offshore areas. Similarly, the land and estuary areas exhibited higher antibiotic diversity than the offshore areas. The ARGs were widely distributed on land, and their abundance gradually decreased to the downstream estuary area. Land and coastal areas exhibited higher ARG diversity than estuary areas. Analysis of environmental factors revealed a significant correlation between ARGs and non-corresponding antibiotics, and some ARGs were affected by heavy metals Cu and Pb.

Fungi are among key actors in the biogeochemical processes occurring in mangrove ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the changes of fungal communities in selected mangrove species by exploring differences in diversity, structure and the degree of ecological rearrangement occurring within the rhizospheres of four mangrove species (Sonneratia alba, Rhizophora mucronata, Ceriops tagal and Avicennia marina) at Gazi Bay and Mida Creek in Kenya. Alpha diversity investigation revealed that there were no significant differences in species diversity between the same mangrove species in the different sites. Rather, significant differences were observed in fungal richness for some of the mangrove species. Chemical parameters of the mangrove sediment significantly correlated with fungal alpha diversity and inversely with richness. The fungal community structure was significantly differentiated by mangrove species, geographical location and chemical parameters. Taxonomic analysis revealed that 96% of the amplicon sequence variants belonged to the Phylum Ascomycota, followed by Basidiomycota (3%). Predictive FUNGuild and co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the fungal communities in Gazi Bay were metabolically more diverse compared to those of Mida Creek. Overall, our results demonstrate that anthropogenic activities influenced fungal richness, community assembly and their potential ecological functions in the mangrove ecosystems investigated.

This study aimed to reduce the risk of graft occlusion by evaluating the two-phase flow of blood and LDL nanoparticles in coronary artery grafts. The study considered blood as an incompressible Newtonian fluid, with the addition of LDL nanoparticles, and the artery wall as a porous medium. Two scenarios were compared, with constant inlet velocity (CIV) and other with pulsatile inlet velocity (PIV), with LDL nanoparticles experiencing drag, wall-induced lift, and induced Saffman lift forces, or drag force only. The study also evaluated the concentration polarization of LDLs (CP of LDLs) near the walls, by considering the artery wall with and without permeation. To model LDL nanoparticles, the study randomly injected 100, 500, and 1000 nanoparticles in three release states at each time step, using different geometries. Numerical simulations were performed using COMSOL software, and the results were presented as relative collision of nanoparticles to the walls in tables, diagrams, and shear stress contours. The study found that a graft implantation angle of 15° had the most desirable conditions compared to larger angles, in terms of nanoparticle collision with surfaces and occlusion. The nanoparticle release modes behaved similarly in terms of collision with the surfaces. A difference was observed between CIV and PIV. Saffman lift and wall-induced lift forces having no effect, possibly due to the assumption of a porous artery wall and perpendicular outlet flow. In case of permeable artery walls, relative collision of particles with the graft wall was larger, suggesting the effect of CP of LDLs.

Coastal sedimentary systems are affected by continental and marine metal pollutant inputs associated with different hydrodynamic characteristics and geochemical processes. These include the formation of acid-volatile sulfides (AVS) within sediments, which affects metal bioavailability and associated aquatic biota toxicity risks. Physicochemical changes in these environments in the face of extreme natural or man-made environmental influences can dramatically alter metal bioavailability and toxicity through metal binding and immobilization as insoluble sulfides. Surface sediments from Guanabara Bay, river mouths, and two mangrove areas were collected, and AVS and simultaneously extracted metals Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn and ΣSEM were determined to assess sediment quality. A severe eutrophication history favored AVS concentrations exceeding or close to the sum-SEM concentrations, demonstrating that AVS play an important role in making trace metals unavailable for assimilation by living organisms, mitigating the risks of contamination for the local biota. This eutrophication-driven sulfide accumulation may attenuate the sediment toxicity in sites heavily polluted by metals, while some fewer eutrophic sites became more exposed to metals in excess to AVS.

The trophodynamic of organophosphate esters (OPEs) has not been known well despite their widespread occurrence in the aquatic environments. In this study, ten species of crustacean, seven species of mollusk, and 22 species of fish were collected in the Laizhou Bay (LZB) to examine the occurrence, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer, and health risk of eight traditional OPEs and three emerging oligomeric OPEs. The results showed that total concentration of OPEs was 2.04 to 28.6 ng g-1 ww in the muscle of crustacean, mollusk, and fish and 2.62 to 60.6 ng g-1 ww in the fish gill. Chlorinated OPEs averagely contributed to over 85% of total OPEs while oligomeric OPEs averagely accounted for approximate 4%. The average log apparent bioaccumulation factor (ABAF) ranged from - 0.4 L kg-1 ww for triethyl phosphate to 2.4 L kg-1 ww for resorcinol-bis (diphenyl) phosphate. Apparent trophic magnification factors (ATMF) of individual OPE were generally less than 1, demonstrating the biodilution effect of the OPEs in the organism web of LZB. Additionally, the log ABAF and ATMF of OPEs were significantly positively correlated to their log Kow but negatively correlated to their biotransformation rate constant (BRC). Therefore, the OPEs with high Kow and low BRC tend to more accumulate in the marine organisms. The health risks associated with OPEs through the consumption of the seafood from the bay were low, even at high exposure scenario.

To reveal the long-term variation of macrofauna community in Yueqing Bay, an aquacultural bay famous for its shellfish culturing in the East China Sea, macrofauna samples were collected in three period from 2002 to 2003 and 2006-2007 to 2020-2021. The results show that macrofaunal community structure in this area has changed significantly (ANOSIM, p < 0.01) in nearly two decades with significant decreases in species number, biodiversity index and average biomass. Meanwhile, the taxa composition also changed significantly as the dominance of annelid increased while that of mollusks, echinoderms and vertebrates decreased. As a consequence of the variation of taxa composition and total biomass, macrofauna community showed a tendency of miniaturization as individuals with smaller body size and lower biomass dominated the community. According to the results of CCA analysis, temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen content were the main environmental factors that restricted the species composition of macrofauna community. Further studies still needed to reveal the main reasons that cause the variation of macrofauna community. Overall, the results of this study suggest that the present status of Yueqing Bay benthic ecosystem is concerning from a macrobenthos perspective, as the biodiversity index and biomass of macrofauna decreased significantly. Effective measures should be taken in urgently to restrain the safety and function of coastal ecosystems.

While anthropogenic pollution is a major threat to aquatic ecosystem health, our knowledge of the presence of xenobiotics in coastal Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) is still relatively poor. This is especially true for water bodies in the Global South with limited information gained mostly from targeted studies that rely on comparison with authentic standards. In recent years, non-targeted tandem mass spectrometry has emerged as a powerful tool to collectively detect and identify pollutants and biogenic DOM components in the environment, but this approach has yet to be widely utilized for monitoring ecologically important aquatic systems. In this study we compared the DOM composition of Algoa Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa, and its two estuaries. The Swartkops Estuary is highly urbanized and severely impacted by anthropogenic pollution, while the Sundays Estuary is impacted by commercial agriculture in its catchment. We employed solid-phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry to annotate more than 200 pharmaceuticals, pesticides, urban xenobiotics, and natural products based on spectral matching. The identification with authentic standards confirmed the presence of methamphetamine, carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole, N-acetylsulfamethoxazole, imazapyr, caffeine and hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine, and allowed semi-quantitative estimations for annotated xenobiotics. The Swartkops Estuary DOM composition was strongly impacted by features annotated as urban pollutants including pharmaceuticals such as melamines and antiretrovirals. By contrast, the Sundays Estuary exhibited significant enrichment of molecules annotated as agrochemicals widely used in the citrus farming industry, with predicted concentrations for some of them exceeding predicted no-effect concentrations. This study provides new insight into anthropogenic impact on the Algoa Bay system and demonstrates the utility of non-targeted tandem mass spectrometry as a sensitive tool for assessing the health of ecologically important coastal ecosystems and will serve as a valuable foundation for strategizing long-term monitoring efforts.

BACKGROUND: Community health workers (CHWs) cover extensive areas observing the environmental conditions in which community members live. However, current CHW training modules do not have modules focusing specifically on environmental health. CHWs appear to lack knowledge of environmental health hazards, and little is known of their attitudes and practices regarding environmental health hazards. The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of CHWs in relation to environmental health hazards in the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB). METHODS: This study used a quantitative, cross-sectional research design. A sample of 110 respondents completed the questionnaire. The questionnaire was based on the literature, consisting of 36 items in four sections. Data analysis consisted of descriptive and inferential statistics. Reliability and validity were enhanced by utilizing a pre-test study. RESULTS: There were significant differences in attitudes (t = -2.308, df = 91.107, p = 0.023) and practices (t = -2.936, df = 62.491, p = 0.005). Those trained in environmental health had a significantly lower mean attitudes score (m = 3.2365, sd = 1.113) compared to those not trained in environmental health (m = 3.694, sd = 0.894). In addition, those trained in environmental health had a significantly lower mean practice score (practiced more frequently) (m = 1.231, sd = 0.327) compared to those not trained in environmental health (m = 1.4605, sd = 0.4162). Regarding training, 62% (n = 67) of CHWs felt they needed additional training in environmental health. CONCLUSION: Most of the CHWs had a moderate knowledge of environmental health hazards. Furthermore, most of the CHWs had a very positive or positive attitude towards environmental health hazards. However, there is a need for CHWs to receive very specific training in environmental health. In addition, the scope of work of CHWs, as well as their role in relation to environmental health, needs to be further explored.

Coastal ecosystems such as salt marshes, seagrass meadows, and kelp forests contribute to climate regulation as carbon sinks. However, coastal ecosystems may act as carbon sources as beach wrack accumulations may release greenhouse gases (GHG) during decomposition. The magnitude of GHG emissions of beach wrack accumulations under natural conditions are poorly understood, hampering accurate blue carbon accountings. In this study, we assessed the spatio-temporal variability and environmental factors driving CO2, CH4 and N2O emissions from beach wrack accumulations on a temperate sandy beach. Beach wrack accumulations, dominated by Zostera marina and opportunistic brown macroalgae, presented variable spatio-temporal dynamics. Annual beach wrack GHG emissions achieved up to 77,915 mg m-2 d-1 CO2e (CO2 equivalents) and varied largely throughout the study period due to interactive effects of temperature, wave exposure, beach wrack biomass moisture, abundance, and species composition. Our findings showed that methane emissions in new, freshly deposited, and in drifting wrack in the water reached up to 100 mg m-2 d-1, representing up to 57 % of annual CO2e emissions occurring throughout the year. Nitrous oxide emissions were highly variable and comprised a minor extent (i.e., up to 4 %) of annual CO2e emissions. Together, wrack CH4 and N2O emissions provided 13.69 g CO2 m-2 per year to the atmosphere. Our findings indicate that excessive opportunistic macroalgae biomass driven by eutrophication may explain increased CO2 and N2O emissions. We conclude that whilst beach wrack depositions are a natural and essential part of coastal ecosystems, they may provide an extra source of GHG to the atmosphere, potentially counteracting the role of vegetated coastal ecosystems as carbon sinks.

The Bay of Bengal (BoB) spans >2.2 million km2 in the northeastern Indian Ocean and is bordered by dense populations that depend upon its resources. Over recent decades, a shift from larger phytoplankton to picoplankton has been reported, yet the abundance, activity, and composition of primary producer communities are not well-characterized. We analysed the BoB regions during the summer monsoon. Prochlorococcus ranged up to 3.14 × 105 cells mL-1 in the surface mixed layer, averaging 1.74 ± 0.46 × 105 in the upper 10 m and consistently higher than Synechococcus and eukaryotic phytoplankton. V1-V2 rRNA gene amplicon analyses showed the High Light II (HLII) ecotype formed 98 ± 1% of Prochlorococcus amplicons in surface waters, comprising six oligotypes, with the dominant oligotype accounting for 65 ± 4% of HLII. Diel sampling of a coherent water mass demonstrated evening onset of cell division and rapid Prochlorococcus growth between 1.5 and 3.1 div day-1, based on cell cycle analysis, as confirmed by abundance-based estimates of 2.1 div day-1. Accumulation of Prochlorococcus produced by ultradian growth was restricted by high loss rates. Alongside prior Arabian Sea and tropical Atlantic rates, our results indicate Prochlorococcus growth rates should be reevaluated with greater attention to latitudinal zones and influences on contributions to global primary production.

INTRODUCTION: Gastric inlet patches are often incidental, but can also be a treatable cause of laryngo-esophageal symptoms. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients whose gastric inlet patches were diagnosed following assessment for laryngopharyngeal and swallowing symptoms. Improvement following Argon Plasma Coagulation (APC) was assessed using Minimum Clinically-Important Difference methodology combining voice, throat, and swallowing domains. Correlations between APC response and measures of reflux and mucosal barrier integrity, measured during 24-h pH-impedance manometry, were obtained. Proximal and Distal Mean Nocturnal Baseline Impedance (MNBI) values were separately calculated and the novel variable of Mucosal Impedance Gradient was derived as [((Distal MNBI-Proximal MNBI)/((Distal MNBI + Proximal MMBI)/2)) x 100]. KEY RESULTS: Inlet patches were detected in 57 of 651 patients who had Transnasal Panendoscopy (8.7 ± 2.2%). There were 34 males. Mean age was 58 years. Mean duration of symptoms was 2 years. The commonest symptoms were hoarseness (n = 33), throat symptoms (n = 24), and dysphagia (n = 21), respectively. APC was used to ablate patches in 34 patients. Treatment response was 71% at a mean followup of 5.5 months. MIG > - 25% predicted response to APC, with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.875 (Sensitivity = 81%; Specificity = 100%; p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Gastric inlet patches are common and under-recognized. They can cause protracted pharyngo-esophageal symptoms. Patch ablation is an effective treatment for carefully selected patients. Optimal patient selection requires multidisciplinary teamwork. Mucosal Impedance Gradient could further refine patient selection.

Despite the extensive development of microalgae biotechnology, it still requires new methodologies to lower production costs, especially in the field of biofuel production. Therefore, innovative methods that facilitate operations and enable cost-effective production are important in driving this industry. In this study, we propose a new low-cost and easy-to-use procedure, addressed to the generation of a culture medium for Scenedesmus acutus. The medium was obtained by thermal reduction of a sludge sample from El Ferrol Bay (Chimbote, Peru), whereby we obtained an aqueous medium. Our results indicated that the aqueous medium incorporates all necessary nutrients for microalgae production; allowing a maximum biomass of 0.75 ± 0.07 g/L with 60% of the medium; while high lipids production (59.42 ± 6.16%) was achieved with 20%. Besides, we quantified, in the experimental medium and at the end of the cultures, the levels of inorganic nutrients such as ammonium, nitrites, nitrates, and phosphates; in addition to COD and TOC, which were significantly reduced ( p < 0.05) after 7 days of culture, mainly in the treatment with 20%. These results suggest tremendous potential for sludge reuse, which also entails a cost reduction in microalgae biomass production, with additional positive impacts on large-scale application over highly polluted environments.

RESUMO

Double inlet left ventricle (DILV) is a form of single ventricle heart disease where both atrioventricular valves enter a single left ventricle. Surgical intervention may be needed in the neonatal period secondary to systemic outflow tract obstruction or less commonly pulmonary obstruction. Two-dimensional echocardiography can adequately assess newborn anatomy and define the need for surgery. Beyond the newborn period, there is a renewed interest in septation of DILV using intracardiac baffles in a staged approach. Cross sectional imaging can aid in surgical planning. This article will review common anatomic features of DILV and imaging considerations for both single ventricle palliation and DILV septation.

Ventricular septation of the double-inlet ventricle is a largely abandoned operation due to poor historical outcomes. However, there has been renewed interest in septation as an alternative to Fontan palliation given its long-term sequelae. As one of the few centers to revisit septation in the early 1990s, our institution has long-term data on a series of patients with a double-inlet ventricle who underwent biventricular repair. This manuscript is a summary of our approach to staged septation of the double-inlet ventricle, with a focus on patient selection criteria, surgical techniques, perioperative considerations on timing of interventions, and long-term results. We believe that septation of the double-inlet ventricle should be reconsidered in patients with suitable anatomy in light of the known complications of Fontan palliation.

This study presents a novel approach to high-resolution density distribution mapping of two key species of the 1170 "Reefs" habitat, Dendrophyllia cornigera and Phakellia ventilabrum, in the Bay of Biscay using deep learning models. The main objective of this study was to establish a pipeline based on deep learning models to extract species density data from raw images obtained by a remotely operated towed vehicle (ROTV). Different object detection models were evaluated and compared in various shelf zones at the head of submarine canyon systems using metrics such as precision, recall, and F1 score. The best-performing model, YOLOv8, was selected for generating density maps of the two species at a high spatial resolution. The study also generated synthetic images to augment the training data and assess the generalization capacity of the models. The proposed approach provides a cost-effective and non-invasive method for monitoring and assessing the status of these important reef-building species and their habitats. The results have important implications for the management and protection of the 1170 habitat in Spain and other marine ecosystems worldwide. These results highlight the potential of deep learning to improve efficiency and accuracy in monitoring vulnerable marine ecosystems, allowing informed decisions to be made that can have a positive impact on marine conservation.
